James Nottaway brings a lifetime of hockey experience, profound resilience, and a deep commitment to community building to the RELM Sports family. A true student of the sport, James’s background spans from being a highly scouted competitive player to a dedicated team builder and advocate for Indigenous youth.

A Versatile Playing Career

Growing up on the ice, James was a rare “6-way player,” possessing the unique ability and hockey IQ to play every single position. Playing competitively from ages 8 to 20, his adaptability was unmatched, earning him awards for Best Forward, Best Defenseman, and Best Goaltender throughout his youth career.

At 16 years old, James competed in the prestigious Dodge Cup (now the Chevrolet Cup) at the Jr. BB level. Known for his commanding physical presence on the ice and a highly coachable, team-first mentality, he quickly caught the attention of major junior scouts. During this time, he drew active interest from QMJHL franchises, including the Rimouski Océanic and the Halifax Mooseheads.

James’s promising playing career was unfortunately cut short by a severe hip check that resulted in a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus. Rather than stepping away from the game he loved, James pivoted his passion. He transitioned his focus from playing to evaluating and assembling competitive teams, a role he has excelled in ever since.

Empowering Indigenous Athletes

In his vital role as Indigenous Community Liaison, James serves as a dedicated advocate, mentor, and cultural bridge for Indigenous players and students within the RELM Sports program. He is deeply committed to fostering an inclusive environment, ensuring that Indigenous athletes have the representation, guidance, and community support they need to thrive both on and off the ice.

Professional Background & Education

Outside of hockey operations, James has a strong background in mentorship, having spent two years working as a physical education teacher. Dedicated to his professional development and community growth, James has successfully completed:

• Indigenous Entrepreneurship Course: Equipping him with the business acumen to lead community-focused initiatives and champion Indigenous representation in sports.

• Sports Management Worldwide (SMWW) Certification: Providing him with cutting-edge insights into scouting, team management, and modern sports operations.

James’s comprehensive understanding of the game—from the crease to the front office—combined with his passion for uplifting the next generation of Indigenous athletes, makes him an invaluable leader at RELM Sports.
